Driving Directions
The temple is fairly easy to find and it is only thirteen miles from the airport. From the airport, exit onto the freeway and take the H1 Honolulu East. Once on the freeway, get into the far left lane. Follow the sign that says (63) North, Exit 20A Likelike Highway (pronounced leekay leekay, not like like). This exit appears on the right. Stay on this highway. You will pass through the Wilson Tunnel. Once out of the tunnel, there is an astonishing view of the windward side. Take the Kahekili exit (83) on the right. Get into the left lane . You will pass through five stop lights. The temple is on the left side. The Valley of the Temple's Cemetery is what appears on your left. There is a little hut at the entrance where you may buy flowers if visiting the cemetery. Follow the winding road, and at the end is the parking lot at the entrance to the Temple.
Alternatively, take the Pali Highway over the mountains to Kamehameha Highway using the Kaneohe exit continue to the H-3 past the Likelike Highway. Past Windward community College. Travel another three miles and make a left turn onto Ave of the Temples, Which is the main road through the Valley of the temples Memorial Park. The Byodo-in Temple is at the end of this road. There is ample parking at the entrance to the temple.
NOTE: The Pali Highway contraflow will still be available to Honolulu bound drivers on Sunday, September 1 from 5-11:30 a.m. The new regular hours will allow access in both directions Sunday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed Saturday and overnight).
Public Transportation Directions
TheBus (city bus: 808-848-5555). Current bus fare is $2.50. We suggest that you carry small changes in you pocket.
From Waikiki, catch TheBus # 8 from Kuhio Avenue to Ala Moana Shopping Center. From the Ala Moana Bus Stop, catch a Bus # 65 toward Kahaluu/Kaneohe direction. Get off at the last stop at the corner of Kahekili Highway & Hui Iwa Street East (McDonald at the corner). Walk across Kahekili Highway and go into the Valley Of The Temples Memorial Park (private cemetery). After going though the first security station, approx. 1/2 mile gentle uphill walkway into a valley where the temple is situated.
For return, you would take the same # 65 that would either go to Downtown Honolulu or to Ala Moana. Ask for a "Transfer Ticket" from the bus driver, in case you catch Bus # 55. You need to get off at Kaneohe bus stop and wait for Bus # 65. If you go as far as the Higenic Store area at the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Kahekili Highway, wait for # 65. Otherwise the # 55 turn toward Laie, Kahuku and Turtle Bay Hilton direction. It takes approx. 1.5 hour to 2 hours from Waikiki vs. 30 minutes by a car or taxi (approx. $40 one way by taxi).
